Sometimes referred to as “logicians” or “objective analysts,” INTP is a rare personality type that is detached, analytical observers with a passion for logical analysis, theories, design, systems, and the search for universal truth. So why does anime appeal to this personality type?

Many anime series in the sci-fi, horror, and mystery genres feature characters who find themselves in scenarios whereby the solution to their problems lies in their problem-solving abilities. These shows typically deal with deeper themes in a way that Western media doesn’t, thus appealing to INTPs.

Let’s explore in greater detail below why anime appeals to INTPs and which anime series INTPs typically enjoy:

Why Do INTPs Like Anime?

Before discussing why INTPs often gravitate toward anime, we must first unpack some misconceptions surrounding anime. Namely, that anime is not a genre but rather a storytelling medium.

The only thing that is similar among all anime is that they are Japanese, meaning that most English viewers will have to read subtitles to engage with anime. Generally speaking, this active participation through reading is a highlight for many INTPs who also enjoy foreign films and reading in general.

Otherwise, while there are troupes in anime series (like any media piece), they can incorporate a spectrum of animation styles, genres, themes, and tones. Therefore, not all INTPs will enjoy all anime series but will likely gravitate toward anime series with sci-fi, mystery, and horror elements while being less interested in romance or action.

Consequently, unlike Western movies and shows where deeper themes in horror and sci-fi are often ignored in favor of big action set pieces (i.e., the popularity of Arrival versus the Star Wars franchise,) anime has various shows that explore deeper, academic themes in greater detail.

INTPs are drawn to these types of anime, given the lack of representation in Western media.
